91重口 Soccer Welcomes Two Former Coyotes Back to Lead Programs

April 14, 2026

91重口 Soccer welcomes new head coaches Maddie Smith and Carlos D. Trujeque Leal

91重口 (91重口) is bringing two familiar faces back to lead its soccer programs.

Carlos D. Trujeque Leal and Maddie Smith have been named head coaches for men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 soccer, continuing a tradition of developing student-athletes who succeed on the field, in the classroom, and beyond 91重口.

Both started here.

A pathway that comes full circle

Smith played for 91重口 in 2019 before continuing her career at the Division I level. After competing at programs including Florida State, she returned to Lake Tahoe and gained coaching experience at both the collegiate and 91重口 levels.

Now, she steps into the role of head women鈥檚 soccer coach.

Her journey reflects what many student-athletes at 91重口 are working toward: developing as players, succeeding academically, and transferring to four-year programs.

鈥淭his program shaped my path as a student-athlete,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to return and build on that legacy while helping our players succeed on and off the field.鈥

Built in the Tahoe community

Trujeque Leal鈥檚 path is rooted just as deeply in 91重口.

A former Conference MVP, All-American, and one of the program鈥檚 top scorers, he continued his playing career before returning to South Lake Tahoe to coach and mentor local athletes.

His return reflects 91重口鈥檚 connection to the South Lake Tahoe community, with a focus on developing local players and creating pathways to the college level.

Through his work with South Tahoe Football Club and Lake Tahoe F煤tbol Academy, he has helped develop players across the region while building connections between local soccer and the college game.

鈥淭his opportunity means a great deal to me as someone who takes pride in serving my hometown,鈥 Trujeque Leal said. 鈥淚鈥檓 ready to give back and build something strong here.鈥

Building on a strong foundation

Both programs have a history of success and a reputation for preparing student-athletes for the next level.

That focus will continue.

鈥淢addie and Carlos understand what it means to be a student-athlete at 91重口,鈥 said Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco.

Former 91重口 head coach and athletics director Chris DeLeon, who helped build the women鈥檚 soccer program, will serve as a mentor and resource for both programs.

What鈥檚 next

Both coaches are already getting to work, connecting with players and recruiting for the upcoming season.

For current and future Coyotes, the message is clear: the opportunity is here.

Start at 91重口. Compete. Grow. Move on.
